Instead of giving you the whole spiel about how I've been singing practically my whole life and have a passion for music etc etc, I'll talk about something else, because I'm more than just a singer. I'm a person. I'll start with how I defiantly moved out of my house when I turned 18, a declaration of independence from my family, only to return later after finding out that my father got sick again. My father is always in and out of the hospital due to his heart problems and was recently diagnosed with congestive heart failure. His hospital bills are currently through the roof and although only 35% of his heart now functions, he's already gone back to work to do overtime in order to pay them off, support the family, and help me pay for school. He's a pretty stand up guy and words cannot express the immense amount of admiration and appreciation that I have for him. At one point, I myself was working two jobs trying to make money to pay for school, so I guess I can empathize a little with him, and there was a time when I actually couldn't afford to miss school or work to visit him in the hospital. It killed me thinking that there was a possibility that I wouldn't be by his bedside in what could have been his final moments, and I never want that to happen again. He's always been in my corner, especially when it comes to my singing and DJ-ing, and I'll always be in his.
I love my family: they always did the very best they could to raise me and I couldn't be more grateful to have them, but we've undergone a lot of emotional hardship in the past few years, losing loved ones and bearing with traumatic events. The one thing I've learned from my parents and my own life experiences is how to persevere through anything and work hard for what you really want.
I know what I'm capable of and for me the sky is the limit. I've been auditioning for singing tv shows and competitions since I was 15, and along the way I've acquired helpful criticism, training, and advice on how to improve my vocal performance. (Of course, there's definitely still room for improvement). In addition, I met inspiring people, and overall just learned a lot about myself too. I've realized that getting my big break is more than just a dream to me – it's become my goal, no matter how greatly the odds may be stacked against my success. I haven't always been this self-confident haha: I was once that four-eyed frizzy-haired weird short shy insecure girl from the city — and of course she'll always remain a part of me — but keeping that in mind, I really feel like one day I could serve as a good role model, maybe even an inspiration, to other young girls. Hey there! This is Blake Ellege from the beautiful "Land of the Waterfalls" in Brevard, N.C.! I am 23 years old and a recent graduate of Brevard College.
Everyone in the world was exposed to Asheville, N.C. this past year when Caleb Johnson won American Idol. Meanwhile, 30 minutes away is another "hot bed" for entertainment and music and it is home to some of the world's most famous musicians! My hometown of Brevard NC is a beautiful piece of heaven located in the middle of the Appalachian Mountains and is home to the most waterfalls per square mile than anywhere else in the United States.
I grew up singing Southern Gospel with my family at the age of 4 and traveled with them, singing in churches every weekend. My experience performing with them over the years showed me what it's like to sing 3 part harmony, train my ear and build a good groundwork on how to be a good performer and singer. I still travel and sing with them to this very day.
At the age of 16, I decided to try my hand at Rock & Roll, Oldies and Blues music. My horizons were broadened and I found a new love in music! I started oldies and blues bands with my friends and even did some Elvis Impersonations along the way! I traveled all over the southeast and performed in all kinds of bars and clubs. I even had the pleasure of performing a couple of times at BB Kings Blues Club in Memphis, TN.
By this time, I was about to graduate high school and I realized that I needed to further my education. So, I made the decision to attend Brevard College and get my degree in music. During this time, I got classical training in the profession and calling I had on my life. I thought I knew everything there was to know about music when I started at Brevard College due to the lifetime I had already spent singing with my family and traveling and singing all kinds of styles of music; but I was wrong. During my time there, my musical horizons were broadened yet again. This time I was exposed to classical and jazz music. I recieved classical vocal training in my studies at Brevard College as a student and won several awards during my time there. One in particular is when I ranked one of the Top 4 Classically Trained Tenors in the WHOLE United States at the National NATS Competition held in Boston, Massachusetts this past year. I performed with the college's jazz band on every concert they held during my time there and had a blast learning jazz standards and performing them.
I've had all kinds of performance experience singing different styles of music during my lifetime. Gospel, Country, Bluegrass, Blues, Classical, Rock&Roll and Jazz. Not many singers can say that! I feel like I could be a real asset in showing America the talent that can be right in their own backyard. Take it from me! Talent is out there! All you have to do is find it!

My name is Jasamine Hodge. I am from Kansas City, Missouri–home of the BEST bbq in the U.S. 🙂 I am 24 years old, a mother of one AWESOME little munchkin and a pharmacy student and worker. If given the chance to audition for “The Star Next Door” I would prove to be one FIERCE competitor. I have been singing and writing my own music for quite sometime. My first performance of an original piece was in….kindergarten. I think it had to do something with a jungle and a lonely moth, HAHAHA. I sang it in front of my whole music class. As I got older, I got a little more self conscience and started singing behind closed doors. My dreams of singing and writing music was quieted by my insecurities and discouraging child and teen years. That is until an awesome karaoke night on a cruise ship last summer! The response I got from the crowd lit a fire in my heart that has been stifled for some time and I realized my life experience will only make me grow as a singer and a person. Since last summer I have taken my life by the horns and been performing every chance I get. My daughter LOVES it and knows every song I sing by heart. Adorable, I love to watch her grow into this amazing little person. I also received a vocal scholarship from my school, which is funny because I am a science major, but more about that later 😉 and have built quite the little hometown fan club, the biggest fans being my mom and my baby :-D. I am very pleased to know that I do in fact sing like rock star! Although I lean towards more soulful and bluesy music, I consider myself to be pretty darn versatile and able to sing most genres. I sing with power and have a pretty impressive vocal range. Some of my favorite artists to perform are Etta James, Nina Simone, Heart and Emeli Sande. If you give me the chance, I assure you I will not disappoint. It took me a long time to get my confidence and I would be more grateful than you could ever know if given the chance to make my life long dream come true. I’ve also performed at Carnegie Hall in April 2009 and November 2011, The United Nations and for Governor David Paterson. My school entered me into a contest of which I was declared the competition winner. In May 2012, I was afforded the privilege to sing at a gala for Donald Trump. In May 2012 I sang background for Eric Benet. At my young age I try to everything I can to make sure I include music in my life and so far at the age of 18 I can say I've done things that alot of 18 year olds may never get to do and I hope to add this event to my list!

Hello! I'm Mia Johnson, I'm black,15 years old and I live in a very small town, McMinnville, Tennessee. I have been singing in choirs at school and at church. I make YouTube videos also. My videos don't always express my full potential in singing but it's a way to get myself out there. The only time I have ever sang on stage by myself was in a talent show at my school during a half time talent show. I wasn't allowed to actually compete because I was taking part in hosting it. I currently work with a producer Kashif who is known for many hits and bringing Whitney Houston to fame.
